Tim McFerran
Vice President, Maloof Skateboarding
Age: 45
Fact: He’s 6-feet, 8-inches tall and a former basketball player who still plays regularly.
On his current career: “After a few sleepless nights, I decided to jump into this industry. It presented a new challenge; I didn’t know anything about skateboarding.”
After spending 20 years in the toy business, Tim McFerran rolled into the world of skateboarding, a sport he knew little about. And it didn’t take long for him to make an impact, bringing renewed excitement and fanfare to this segment of the action-sports industry.
“I had never skated and I didn’t know a thing about skateboarding,” he says.
His leap came while directing NBA basketball camps with Joe Maloof, who approached him with the idea of creating a skateboarding camp. McFerran quit his job, and last summer he launched the Maloof Money Cup with Maloof brothers Joe and Gavin. The contest, held at the Orange County fairgrounds, made skateboarding history, with a record $450,000 in total prize money.
“We changed the contest format to better fit TV than what was currently on TV,” McFerran says. “We created a cement street course – the first time it has ever been done. And since today’s contests seem to attract only a few of the top skaters, we targeted key skaters who don’t compete, then added the contest skaters to create the greatest collection of skaters to ever compete together.”
