Hot factor: Her popular mom blog draws more than 1 million readers per month
Before starting her blog, “Rage Against the Minivan,” in 2007, Kristen Howerton didn’t have any other experience writing other than contributing to her high school newspaper. However, today this Costa Mesa mom of four draws more than 1 million readers every month. Howerton was named the nation’s 17th Most Influential Blogger by Disney’s parenting website, Babble.
Her background as a marriage and family therapist has given her an intelligent parenting voice, which has landed her appearances on CNN, “The View,” Fox News and MSNBC, as well as a position as a regular contributor to The Huffington Post.
“I really started blogging as a coping skill in 2007,” Howerton says about the genesis of her full-time job. “I realized at some point that other people were reading me, not just family and friends, and it’s grown from there.”
It has also become profitable. “I make more money as a blogger than I did as a therapist,” Howerton says.
That’s quite a feat. With more than 3 million mom bloggers in the U.S. alone, only a small fraction can make a living writing about their perspective of motherhood. Howerton’s unique family story, wicked sense of humor and passion for what she is doing has allowed her voice to rise above the seemly endless sea of other mom bloggers.
