CLIMB THAT LADDER
Tony Reagins’ impressive rise within the Angels organization is unusual but far from unprecedented. In fact, smart, hardworking men and women are climbing the corporate ladder at this very moment.
Are you? If you’re really hungry enough for that corner office, consider these tips:
• Get to work: You’ll go nowhere fast unless you show up, put in quality effort, demand quality results from yourself and master your job.
• Schmooze: Get to know your co-workers, build an in-house job network and be as helpful as possible. Interact with managers other than your own.
• Keep learning: Pick your colleagues’ brains. Attend that 3-day seminar. Finish that 2-year master’s degree program.
• Speak up: Let your voice be heard, and work to hone your interpersonal and professional communications skills.
• Skip sideways: Be willing to make a lateral move, if that will help position you for future growth.
• Take smart risks: You’ll be noticed if you volunteer for – and nail – the difficult assignments. But pass on the “suicide missions.”
• Toot your horn: After all, if you won’t who will? Just remember to do sell yourself in a confident, classy manner.
• Build your profile: Hit professional conferences. Write relevant articles. Speak at professional gatherings. Get out there.
• Don’t hide the bad news: Be open about dicey situations, and have well-thought-out plans to fix them.
